About the Role

About the team: The Data Science team is responsible for providing business intelligence services to the whole project and for deriving data-driven insights to support World’s key decisions. Because of our unique growth model of using a global network of Orb Operators to verify individuals’ unique humanness, we require a high-performing Data Science team that is able to manage and analyze large amounts of data generated by our products and operations. World’s privacy-maximizing approach imposes unique restrictions on how data is collected, stored, and used, making data science innovations critical to derive useful insights. We have earned a reputation for our technical expertise, hands-on approach, responsiveness, precision, and impactful solutions.

About the Opportunity: As the Director of Data Science, you will lead and build out the Data Science team. The team currently consists of two data scientists but is expected to grow significantly in the next year. You will set the team’s priorities and hire new team members as needed. You will be responsible for innovating and introducing new data science and business intelligence solutions to continuously improve our ability to leverage data. You and your team will be a service provider for many other teams at World, in particular Economic Operations, Product, Market Operations, CX, Marketing and the Office of the CEO. You will report to the Chief Economist/Chief Analytics Officer. Your work will directly impact World’s strategic decisions and global resource allocation.

Responsibilities

• Build out and lead a high-performing team of data analysts and data scientists
• Foster a culture of high quality work and continuous improvement
• Define World’s key metrics together with other stakeholders
• Create transparency on key metrics by designing, developing and maintaining dashboards and visualizations of the highest quality
• Collaborate with the Economics team on field experimentation and advanced statistical analyses
• Collaborate closely with the Data & Analytics Engineering team to ensure the collection of accurate, high-quality data in the Data Warehouse
• Collaborate with the Blockchain and Tokenomics teams to analyze high-volume amounts of blockchain data

Qualifications

• MSc in economics, computer science, operations research, or similar
• 5+ years of hands-on technical experience as an IC in a data science role, or similar
• 5+ years of management experience building and leading data science teams
• Extensive experience in business intelligence, with a passion for high-quality data visualizations that are easily accessible to non-experts and maintained with rigorous attention to detail
• Service provider mindset, with a passion for enabling other teams
• Extensive experience with BI tools like Metabase, Tableau, Looker, or PowerBI
• Extensive experience with A/B testing
• Experience interfacing with data and analytics engineers to deploy and maintain data science applications
• Good understanding of statistics/econometrics (e.g., causal inference)
• Programming experience in SQL, Python, or similar programming languages
• Skilled at managing cross-functional relationships and communicating with leadership across multiple teams
• The following are a plus but not required: good understanding of game theory and mechanism design, experience with geospatial data visualization, experience with graph algorithms, experience with social listening tools, basic understanding of blockchain technology
